CHAO PHRAYA RIVER

The Chao Phraya river is a magnificent waterway that runs through Bangkok and which offers all visitors an experience that is unique to Thailand and one that should not be missed.

In the past, the people of Bangkok usually settled by the Chao Phraya river and nowadays, although the city has spread out and become modern you can still see traces of the early Rattanakosin period in the architecture and the traditonal ways of life that has remained essentially unchanged over the centuries.

A cruise down the Chao Phraya river is a fascinating cultural experience and also a great way to get around the city to see many of the major attractions that are easily accessible from the river. The cheapest way to travel along the river is also one of the most interesting and enjoyable ways to get about. There is a regular express boat service up and down the river that operates somewhat like a bus on water and charges a reasonable fare.

There are many piers along the river from which you can board the boat, most are on the Bangkok side of the river but there are always ferries that take commuters back and forth from the piers to the Thonburi side for about 3 Baht for the one way trip.

If you are staying at one of the riverside hotels then you will most likely find that there is a pier located nearby. For those staying eleswhere in the city a convenient way to get to a pier is to take the elevated train system (Sky train) to the Taksin Bridge station. The express boat pier is below the station (under the bridge). Here you will find a booth where you can buy tickets and make enquiries. The boats get crowded during rush hours. so for some it may be a good time to avoid, however, for others it can be an interesting spectacle. watching the crowds getting on and off the boat.

There is also a special "Chao Phraya Tourist Boat" service that has newer more comfortable boats and serves only those piers which are of interest to tourist. The one-day river pass costs 75 Baht(about US$2) which entitles you to an unlimited number of trips on the same day. If you are only planning to make few trips then this mode of transport is quite expensive compared to the regular boats, unless you prefer to have a bit more comfort.

About Khlong Bangkok Noi( Bangkok Noi Canal ) Dubbed by Westerners at the time as the “Venice of East,” Bangkok is still an enchanting city, with the local people’s way of life closely aligned with the life-giving waterways. The charm of living along the banks of serene klong (canal) is much the same as in the past. Historical records point to Bangkok Noi Canal, in Bangkok Noi District being part of the majestic Chao Phraya River. This canal flows in a horseshoe shape through the old Bangkok Noi community in the Thonburi area. The community was established in the Ayutthaya Period and King Chai Racha Dhiraj who ruled between 1534 and 1546, commanded the excavation of a shortcut waterway from Bangkok Noi Canal to Bangkok Yai Canalto facilitate transport and communications. Along both banks of the Bangkok Noi Canal, visitors see orchid growers and places of cultural and historical significance. On a boat trip from the mouth of the canal near Thonburi railway station, it is possible to see the National Museum of Royal Barges on the right hand side. A place to stop and look at the barges used in the Royal Barge Procession – the most spectacular of waterfront events. The boat trip takes in several major temples such as Wat Si Sudaram, which houses Thailand’s largest image of the Venerable Somdet Phra Phitthachan (To Phrommarangsi). Other interesting temples are Wat Suwannaram and Wat Nai Rong, famous for their old and magnificent murals. Before turning into the Chak Phra Canal you can see beautiful, traditional Thai houses with carved designs.Although cargo boats have turned to use the new route of the Chao Phraya River, the lively Khlong Bangkok Noi community still endures. It reflects a bygone Thai lifestyle, inextricably related with waterways, and a Thai identity handed down from generation to generation.
